What to do if the overhead projector fails

If all your forward planning fails and you have a faulty projector that cannot be fixed, then you will have to present from the lectern. Remember to make a joke of it to the audience and refuse to let it throw you off balance. Life is like that - just when you thought you had it all together, the light goes out! Obviously you will have to think on your feet, as you will not have any visual aids to progress the speech. Being prepared is the best insurance, so as you prepare your presentation get a mental picture of how to describe the graphic or visual.

Are you fearful of using a microphone?

There are many people and speakers who are microphone-phobic. They recoil in horror at the mention of using a microphone. They prefer instead to strain their voice in an effort to be heard. The microphone does not have any sinister influences (except when it doesn't work); it merely amplifies the sound comfortably throughout the length and breadth of the venue. You simply speak into it, in your normal speaking voice and it will do the rest. If you can push past the phobia always say 'yes' to the use of a microphone as it puts less strain on you and the audience. Remember the audience should be paramount in your communications - if they cannot hear your words clearly you might as well pack up shop, because your words will 'fall on deaf ears'.
