![]() | The tradition of drinking a toast began long ago when early Romans drank to their gods as part of their religious rites and as a mark of respect to the dead at ceremonial banquets. The ritual of raising their wine cup to salute others continued on down through history. The term 'toast' originated in Britain in Stuart times in the seventeenth century. It stemmed from the practice of putting a piece of toast in the bottom of the wine cup to improve the flavour of the wine. The toast started off as a salute to the health of the recipient. Today, as we raise our glasses, our good wishes are not limited to good health but may encompass wishes for happiness, success, safe journey, achievement and wealth.
